Saskatchewan Transportation Week Recognizes Those Who Keep the Province Moving

Today, Highways Minister Kim Gartner announced Sept. 21 to 27 is Saskatchewan Transportation Week, recognizing the dedicated people and organizations that keep Saskatchewan connected and moving every day.

"From connecting people to services and communities, to moving Saskatchewan products to markets around the world, transportation is essential to Saskatchewan's success," Gartner said. "This week, we recognize and thank the people who work every day to keep that network operating safely and efficiently." 

"Our organization recognizes the critical role that transportation and logistics professionals play in unlocking Saskatchewan's economic potential," Saskatoon Transportation Club President John Trumpy said. "From highway workers and engineers to everyone playing various roles keeping the province moving by ground, rail and air transportation - thank you all for what you do." 

Transportation plays a vital role in Saskatchewan's economy, supporting agriculture, mining, manufacturing, energy development, tourism and trade. As a land-locked province, Saskatchewan relies on a safe and reliable transportation network to connect businesses and communities to domestic and international markets. 

The Ministry of Highways 2026-27 budget invested approximately $764 million in transportation infrastructure to improve safety, strengthen trade corridors and support economic growth throughout the province. Major projects include the twinning and corridor improvements on Highway 5 east of Saskatoon, expected completion of the Highway 2 overpass at Trans-Canada Highway 1 at Moose Jaw, completion of Highway 17 passing lanes north of Lloydminster, construction of new passing lanes on Highway 10 from Fort Qu'Appelle to Melville, along with twinning Highway 2 north of Prince Albert. 

Saskatchewan's Ministry of Highways is responsible for a variety of key provincial transportation infrastructure. It operates and maintains more than 26,500 km of highways, 16 northern airports and 12 ferries, while investing in community airports, short line railway infrastructure and partnering with municipalities on road projects.

The ministry also operates the Highway Hotline, Saskatchewan's provincial road information system which provides details about construction zones, ferry crossings, closures and incidents related to wildfires to help drivers and shippers plan their routes.

The Government of Saskatchewan has invested more than $14.6 billion in transportation infrastructure since 2008, improving more than 22,700 km of highways across the province.
