Council of the Federation Literacy Award Announced in Saskatchewan

Today is International Literacy Day and, in Saskatchewan, the Government of Saskatchewan is celebrating by announcing that the Lloydminster Learning Council Association (LLCA) has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Council of the Federation Literacy Award (CoFLA). 

The national award is handed out annually across all provinces and territories to recognize an organization that has made significant contributions to strengthening literacy initiatives. 

Recognized as a champion of literacy and lifelong learning in Lloydminster and surrounding communities since 1975, LLCA helps individuals of all ages build skills, confidence and meaningful connections. The organization provides innovative programing in family literacy, adult foundational learning, English language instruction, digital literacy and senior engagement. 

"The Lloydminster Learning Council Association has worked diligently in their community for the past 51 years to build connections, provide literacy education and help shape the foundation of lifelong learning for community members," Education Minister Everett Hindley said. "It is evident throughout all their initiatives that they are committed to making literacy accessible, inclusive and community centered. Congratulations to the LLCA's educators and volunteers on this award." 

Serving more than 1,800 learners annually, LLCA recognizes literacy in its many forms from reading and writing to communication, technology and community belonging. They have implemented initiatives such as family literacy programming, the intergenerational pen pal project, newcomer supports and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Guided by a learner-focused approach and strengthened through strong partnerships, LLCA continues to create opportunities for social inclusion, community belonging and opportunities for everyone it serves.

"It is an honour to see the Lloydminster Learning Council Association recognized for our commitment to literacy in Lloydminster and area," Lloydminster Learning Council Program Director Kimberly Englot said. "The work behind that recognition is very intentional; finding meaningful ways to engage families, remove barriers to learning for everyone, and make literacy part of everyday life for all. We care deeply about this work, and I am proud of the role I've had in shaping and advancing it. I want to thank those whose recognition led to our nomination and letters of support. We are able to advance and continue this work because of the wonderful partner organizations in Lloydminster."

The CoFLA was created in 2004 by Canada's Premiers and since 2005, CoFLA has been awarded annually in recognition of outstanding achievements, innovative practices and excellence in literacy in each of Canada's provinces and territories. This year, the Saskatchewan award recognizes an organization that has made significant contributions toward encouraging families to recognize literacy, in its many forms, to build individual confidence and lifelong success.
