Gluckstein Lawyers Urges Ontario Training Schools Survivors to Understand Their Rights Before Critical 2027 Deadlines

TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, September 1, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Gluckstein Lawyers is calling on survivors of Ontario's historic Training Schools system to seek independent legal advice as key deadlines approach in a landmark $60 million class action settlement.

On June 26, 2026, the Government of Ontario and court-appointed representative plaintiff Warwick (Rick) Brown jointly announced that a $60 million settlement in the Ontario Training Schools class action had been approved by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. The settlement resolves claims arising from historic neglect, deprivation, abuse, and solitary confinement at 13 specific Ontario Training Schools between 1953 and 1984.

All qualifying individuals are automatically considered "Class Members" and are bound by the settlement unless they opt out. Two deadlines now govern their options:

March 22, 2027 — deadline to opt out and preserve the right to file an individual lawsuit.

September 22, 2027 — deadline to submit a claim for compensation under the settlement.

The settlement provides general damages awards based on the nature of harm suffered: up to $5,000 under Track 1 (General Harms) and up to $100,000 under Track 2 (Specific Harms, including sexual and physical abuse).

Survivors who suffered serious abuse-related injuries or prolonged mental health consequences may be entitled to greater compensation through an individual claim. Class members who do not opt out are considered to have surrendered their right to bring their own lawsuit against the Province.
