Lawrence met Dr. Adeniyi Tinubu to discuss how the Sanctuary of Butterflies could advance Nigeria’s conservation, education, and sustainable development goals.
During her visit, Lawrence engaged in an exclusive and highly productive meeting with Dr. Adeniyi Tinubu, a distinguished figure in Nigeria’s academic and development landscape.
Their conversation centered on the profound impact the Sanctuary of Butterflies and its accompanying research library could have on Nigeria’s global standing in conservation, education, and sustainable development.
M. Teresa Lawrence emphasized that the project is directly aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), particularly those focused on quality education, climate action, life on land, and global partnerships.
She highlighted that Nigeria’s commitment to such a forward‑looking conservation initiative would send a powerful message to the world: Nigeria is serious about environmental stewardship, scientific research, and sustainable development.
“Far beyond a sanctuary, this project is a symbol of Nigeria’s leadership in conservation and a beacon for research, education, and global collaboration,” Lawrence said.
The Sanctuary of Butterflies and Library Research Center is envisioned as a premier hub for ecological study, biodiversity preservation, and educational programming for students, researchers, and international partners.
The initiative aims to foster scientific inquiry, promote environmental awareness, and strengthen Nigeria’s role in global conservation efforts.
Lawrence shared her intention to seek funding and strategic partnerships from major institutions, including:
- Dangote Foundation
- African Development Bank (AfDB)
- UNESCO
- Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education
